Yas Waterworld on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi set a new benchmark in aqua park design. It marks an evolution from a purely water-based park to an adventure attraction complete with interactive roller coasters. The water park covers 11 hectares, has 43 rides and attractions and the capacity to host 7,000 visitors. Yas Waterworld is an integral part of Yas Island’s entertainment portfolio and is the newest tourism beacon for Abu Dhabi, drawing regional and international crowds.
Involved from the outset the design team led by Tom Wright crafted a story of a young girl, and her friends, who saved her village from falling into the hands of robber bandits by rediscovering a legendary giant pearl that had always brought prosperity to the village. An Arabian fantasy theme based around the story was then created with a cast of characters, bandit forts, a magical oasis, and thrilling water adventures all surmounted by the giant pearl held over the park on a crag of rock.
Winner of the Leading Edge Award for its architectural ingenuity, theming and original storyline at the World Waterpark Association (WWA) symposium in 2012.
